Discussion List Rules

The most recent idno-discuss list archives that are still on-line (since Jan. 2000)can be accessed here.

The IDNO list implements a policy of maintaining civil discourse. Non-members who wish to post their opinions would help the clarity of the discussion by providing a brief introduction of their position, especially if they are partisans for other constituencies.

1. This list is a volunteer effort by unpaid people. Please respect it. It is the only resource for communication and organizing effort of the IDNO constituency. Having a Domain Name does not give you a licence to disrupt the efforts of other DN owners to organize.

2. This list is not moderated in the sense of pre-vetting of messages by the moderator(s). Moderation consists of exhortations by a moderator who reminds listmembers of the rules and can give warnings. In cases of abuse, it can mean a call for partial or total ostracism, delivered by democratic majority vote by the IDNO members on this list. In order to prevent such an unpleasant situation from arising remember the golden rule of lists: "Don't feed the troll", i.e., ignore the person who tries to abuse the list by stirring up emotions.

3. Observe normal netiquette.

This means: absolutely no reposting of private messages. Of course privacy does not protect unsolicited insulting or threatening private messages. It also means: ask permission from the author, if you want to repost an article elsewhere.

4. Try to avoid ad hominem arguments and refrain from insults. Insulting people is a way of shutting them up. If any listmember feels insulted by another listmember, the offended party should complain to the listowner(s),or if there is an elected moderator, to the moderator, not to the list. The listowner or the moderator will then request the offender to apologize. Refusal to do so will be dealt with by a vote of the IDNO members on the list.

5. Non-members are the guests of IDNO and should be especially sensitive to the rules. When posting, they are requested to put [guest] in the " " space before their email address.

The following resolution has been adopted by the list with regards to guests:

1. Guests (non-IDNO members) on this list be requested to limited themselves to an average (taken over several days) of no more than two posts a day, preferably less, and with particular restraint applying while a list-assembly meeting is "in session". Their posts should include the term "[Guest]" in the subject line.

2. The Chair be authorised to publically remind guests of this provision, should the Chair feel that they are indulging in sustained or egregious abuse of it (e.g. by making four or more posts in a single day)

3. That the Chair be authorised, having issued such a reminder to a particular guest between one and seven days previously, to require that guest's removal from the list for a period of up to one month, the period to be determined at the Chair's discretion and the fact of the removal and period to be notified to the list. (Subject to technical feasibility, the Chair may at its discretion alternately require that they be given a "monitoring-but-not- posting" status for a similar term).

4. That the Chair's decision be reversible or modifiable by a successful motion made and carried on the list, notwithstanding which any removal will remain in force until such a motion is carried, or the removal period expires.

5. That IDNO members be encouraged to be aware of and sensitive to this limitation on guest postings and therefore to take responses to guests off-list unless they directly involve IDNO or list business. *********end of lar9 History of the LAM: Moved by: Peter Hyde Motion recognized by Chair [1999 Nov. 16 7:00 AM GMT] Seconded by: Joop Teernstra Second recognized by Chair: (11/19) Second recognized by Chair: [1999 Nov, 19 {?} GMT] Supported by: Opposed by: Declared as carried by: Chair [1999 Dec. 04 08:00 AM GMT] Calls for Membership vote by: Declared as passed by: -pending 48 hour wait period Declared as passed by chair [1999 Dec. 06 16:40 PM GMT] //////////////////////end of record on lar9

6. Please be considerate to list members who are on low bandwidth connections when replying to other postings. Copy only what is absolutely necessary to make your point understood. And of course, no spam and no attachments.

7. Repeated failure to observe these rules can result in your temporary or permanent loss of posting or reading privileges.

8. Disconnection for Technical Reasons

  • Addresses are removed from the mailing list if: - delivery of mail to that address is impossible over a period of at least 5 days
  • Delivery of mail causes disruptive automatic behaviour (such as bounce messages sent to the mailing list, causing loops) These matters are handled by the list maintainers, and no notification is made. Such temporary disconnection will be undone, as soon as the technical problem has been resolved.

A list of addresses removed for technical reasons can be viewed via a link from this web page.
